Brake fluid, on the other hand, is a purely hydraulic fluid that's used to give your brakes their stopping power. When you push down on your brake pedal and the fluid is transferred to your brakes, it creates pressure that allows your car to stop.

Like any fluid, however, brake fluid doesn't last forever. Brake fluid can absorb air and moisture over time that makes it less effective, and you'll notice it big time when it comes to your stopping power. As a general rule, it's a good idea to have your brake fluid exchanged about once every 20,000 miles or two years. However, some manufacturers will recommend three years regardless of mileage or up to 45,000 miles.
