Front Brake Pad Replacement

Although the layman may not realize such a concept, the front and rear brakes perform different functions and work together when slowing or stopping the car according to how the brakes are applied. The system is engineered to do so automatically without the driver having to determine the best way to apply braking pressure to the individual wheels. When you press the brake pedal, the rear brakes apply first to slow the car, when you press it harder the front brakes engage to stop the car.

Front Brakes 101

The way the brake system works is based on physics and the balance of vehicle weight. If there were only rear brakes, the forward center mass of the car would continue to drag it forward even if the rear wheels were locked in place. The front brakes hold that same mass in place, forcing the car to come to a stop. With such a concept in mind, both sets of brakes are important. Obviously, you have to be able to come to a complete stop, but that doesn't imply you want to come to a complete stop every time you apply the brakes to reduce speed.

Disc & Drum Brakes

Modern cars nearly always have disc brakes for the front and rear wheels. Older cars had front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. The reason for this was that with older technology, drum brakes were more efficient but less reliable. Today's engineering knowledge understands how disc brakes are better at dispersing heat and providing better stopping power, and has solved the problems through alloys and hydraulics in the system the rear brakes used to manage on a mechanical level.

The Risk of Delaying Front Brake Pad Replacement

Ultimately, because the brakes on all four wheels are designed to rigid safety standards, if one fails there is enough redundancy that you can still stop the vehicle. When the car is continued to be driven until all the brakes fail, you won't be able to slow or stop other than to run into an accident. It doesn't take common sense to understand you can't drive without brakes, so once they begin to squeal as a signal the brake pads are getting low, it's time to immediately have an authorized technician properly install new pads.
